Chinese astrology moves in a 60-year cycle, which is composed of two separate but interdependent components:
1) The ten Heavenly Stems, each comprising the five elements that reside in the Yin (female) and Yang (male)
2) The Earthly Branches, symbolized by the twelve zodiac animals.
The Heavenly Stems are denoted by odd years (Yin) and even years (Yang). Thus, a birth year that ends in
zero is a "Yang metal." A year ending in
1 is Yin metal
2 is Yang water
3 is Yin water
4 is Yang wood
5 is Yin wood
6 is Yang fire
7 is Yin fire
8 is Yang earth
9 is Yin earth
The Earthly Branches are characterized by the 12 zodiac animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Serpent, Horse, Ram,
Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Boar.
The traditional Chinese Zodiac begins with the first month of the Chinese New Year, most often February.
